Working with the LEGO Company

One of the other reasons I have been pretty quiet is that about a year ago, I, along with several other people, was providing LEGO (the company) some feedback on their train line. One of the outcomes of this engagement was LEGO inviting myself and about 10 others, to collaborate on the design of something they are referring to as the Hobby Train.

With the new train sets based on RC (bleh), the future of 9v rests on the success or failure of the Hobby Train. While much of the work I did is under NDA, I can say it has been an interesting experience. I really wish I could have documented the whole process but NDA prohibits me from doing so. Once the set is released (targeted for Spring 2007), some pictures of the early process should come to light. Over the next few weeks I will try and post about the various aspects of the project.

I’ve been quiet …

My LEGO activitity has been waaaaay down in the past year. A lot of this has to do with us moving to a new house which is actually an old house. Our new house needs lots of work! With my kids getting older, they are involved in more things and they stay up later so my LEGO time, which used to be in the evening when the kids had gone to bed, doesn’t really exist any more. Cary Clark’s decision to scale back has also had an affect on me although I didn’t think it would.
NCLTC has been asked to do a holiday show so that may rekindle the flame – I like doing the long term shows, they are much more rewarding than a weekend train show.

New LEGO Trains

LUGNET has neen buzzing with the news of two new LEGO Train sets which will be offered later this year (see this thread and this thread). I have known about the forthcoming IR trains for quite some time – close to 18 months I guess, maybe a bit longer. I am one of the Train people invited by Jake McKee to provide feedback to LEGO regarding some of the things they had in the works for Trains (the others being Steve Barie, Huw Millington, Ben Fleskes, and Holger Matthes).

When the news leaked to LUGNET we (the feedback group) found ourselves in an awkward position. We couldn’t comment on the new trains because we were under NDA! We have seen several pictures of the trains recently and unfortunately, haven’t been able to share them yet. I am hoping to get some nice images for ILTCO but to date, have only been able to get one.

I have mixed feelings on the new trains. The prospect of adding IR control to trains is very intriguing but I feel it comes at to high of a cost. The loss of powered rails and the reliance on batteries for power is, IMNSHO, a huge mistake. I believe the primary reason LEGO Trains don’t sell wel is because they are so hard to buy, not because there is anything wrong with them functionally. But, it appears that LEGO feels the market being served by Play Mobile is one they can go after and make money in. I am skeptical. I spoke with one of the specialized retailers near where I live who carries a large line of Play Mobile. He told me he doesn’t sell but 2-3 Play Mobile RC Trains in a year.

18 months ago I wrote a 10 page long document which outlined my feedback on what was then the proposed IR train idea (although by the time the feedback group was exposed to it, it was pretty much of a done deal). I would really like to publish the document as I think many Train fans would find it interesting. I may be able to publush portions of it but probably not the whole thing. I am working with Jake to see what I can share.

NCLUG Harry Potter Layout

NCLUG set up a small layout in conjunction with the release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at the Raleigh Grande Theatre. It was pretty crazy at work at the time and I didn’t do anything to contribute other than bring two of the NCLTC train tables and the associated hardware. I have been meaning to get by to look at it but have yet to do so. Now it is supposed to come down on Wednesday (1/4) – hopefully I can get by to see it.

I did finally see the movie yesterday with my daughter Sophia. I enjoyed it – I think it was the best of the four HP movies so far.

LEGO Donated to Play Space

About a month ago my daughter Isabelle attended a birthday party for her friend Ella at Play Space in Raleigh. We used to go to Play Space years ago but hadn’t been since they moved to their new larger location. Play Space is a non-profit and always looking for assistance. While I was waiting for the birthday party to conclude I asked the woman working the desk if they would be interested in a LEGO donation. She wasn’t sure but told she would ask the director when she had a chance. So I left my name, number, and e-mail address and a few days later received a nice e-mail from Patty Wilson indicating they would love to have some LEGO.
This past weekend the kids and I packed up a box of loose bricks which I had concluded I would never sort along with some old Creator sets which were never opened and took them down to Play Space. Patty was very appreciative of our donation, we gave them about 25 pounds of LEGO which will immediately be put to use.
