LEGO 7979 Advent Calendar

7979 Castle Advent Calendar

7979 Castle Advent Calendar

I don’t know much about the 7979 Castle Advent Calendar set but I ordered one today from LEGO Shop at Home.? Apparently it was slated for a European only release but a limited number were sent to the US and went on sale today.

I am not a Castle fan? so you might wonder why I would buy it.? For the last several years we have put out the LEGO Advent Calendar during the Holidays.? At the recent NCLUG meeting this was discussed briefly and I decided it looked interesting and I like it better than the City Calendar this year and it also has some neat accessories in it which will be useful once the holidays are over.

Did you get yours?

My Airport Shuttle runs again!

There had been a request at the last NCLUG meeting I attended to bring my Airport Shuttle to a future meeting.? I don’t think too much about it but there are quite a few people who have never seen a LEGO monorail in person.? Yesterday I pulled it out and took it along with a couple 4551 Crocodile Engines and four of my CTB-1127 passenger cars.

Carin Proctor brought along some monorail track and was putting it together when I arrived.? She wanted to set up the spiral loops Cary Clark had built for most of the NCLTC layouts years ago.? It took a little while to get the track configured correctly as we were basically winging it but we got it running.? It was a small loop with two spirals, one up, one down connected by a few sections of straight track and a stop/start switch.

I started thinking about it and I am not sure my Airport Shuttle has been used since BrickFest 2004 where it took quite a dive to the floor and broke one of connectors on the motor that the chassis plates connect to.? I found another motor (I’m not even sure where the broken on is these days), a new battery and it was good to go.? It performed admirably, running up and down the spirals without any problems for more than an hour.

My Airport Shuttle is a little unique in that it is six cars long instead of the two which come in the set.? Years ago I figured out how to make it longer and added a 3rd car, as I only had one extra chassis plate at the time.? I picked up another and it was 4 cars long for quite a while.? I rounded up two more chassis plates later and added the 5th and 6th cars at the same time.? I now have a 7th chassis so I’ll probably make another one soon.

The meeting itself was a low key affair, about a dozen people total, most not for the whole meeting.? It was also fun to have a train loop set up – it is nice just to see the train run around in a big circle.? I love the Crocodile Engine and decided to bring it because, like the Airport Shuttle, a lot of people haven’t seen one.?? The passenger cars always generate some discussion as they contain Pink and Maersk Blue elements.? People ask me where those parts came fom – they came from the LEGOLand California Model Shop (how I got them is a story in itself).

I also took my Idea Books and the parts I received to do the initial prototypes for the Hobby Train project.? This odd collection of parts generated a lot of discussion and just about everyone agreed that it really was an odd collection of parts!

LEGO Idea Books

I dug out my collection of Idea Books this morning, I am going to take them to the NCLUG meeting later today.? Idea books are a wonderful thing, it is really too bad LEGO doesn’t produce them any more.? I had forgotten how many of them I had – I have the following:

?

I also have a few other books which are sort of like Idea Books but were not published by LEGO, including the Amazing Animals and Fabulous Figures which were published by DK.? One of the more interesting things I have is a LEGO Time Travelers Birthday Calendar.

I scanned the entire calendar and posted it (not sure why I didn’t take the time to rotate the images but I didn’t) on BrickShelf years ago when I first got it.? I found it in a box of stuff I picked up at a used toy store called Toy Go Round which used to operate in North Raleigh but has since gone out of business.

NCLUG meeting this weekend

This Sunday (Sept. 21st) NCLUG is having a meeting at the Cameron Village Library from 1-4.? I am planning on going, I haven’t been to an NCLUG meeting in a couple months.? My daughter has been building a house she plans to enter in the NC State Fair and has inspired me to build something for this meeting.? I am going to try and build something, probably a house,?from the dark blue bricks I received from the UTB project.

Finally made it to a NCLUG meeting!

This past Sunday I finally made it an NCLUG meeting.? They usually happen once a month but not always so between skipping a few months and me being gone, it has probably been about 6 months since I’ve been to one.? It was nice to see some old faces and meet some new ones.? The crowd was fairly light but it was nice to see some familes there too.? I brought my son and nephew along with me, they had built some sort of desert war scene with a blown up tank.

I brought a Model Team 5561 Big Foot 4×4 with me.? I had built it years ago but it had taken a tumble off a shelf and I had put it in a plastic bag and set it aside to put it back together.? That was probably 5 years ago!? I got it about half of it back together while we sat there and chatted.? Now it is back on a shelf waiting for me to finish it.? I really like the Model Team sets – they are fun to build.
