More LEGO Christmas Ornaments

The December 2005 Shop at Home Catalog had a pretty cool sphere shapped LEGO ornament on it. Shortly afterwards there was a link on the LEGO web site (which I can no longer find) for instructions for the sphere. Fortunately I had saved them and have since uploaded them to BrickShelf.

My kids were interested in making some of these. Sophia and I made a red and green one first which matched the S@H cover. Renee and I also made a yellow and white one. Travis and Sophia and recently watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail and decided the yellow and white looked the Holy Hand Grenade and played with accordingly for a couple of days. We ended up giving both to my mom and dad as part of their Christmas present from the kids.

1x4 Brick with Studs on SideThese spheres are really heavy and use quite a few bricks. I need to load up on the 1×4 Brick with Studs on Side before I can make many more. I also found it odd that I had very few 2×6 Technic plates. Bricklink here I come!

Scrambling for 4886 Building Bonanza

I got an e-mail from my Dad the other day asking if I knew where he could find a 4886 Building Bonanza set for him. He has a LEGO Train running around his Christmas tree and wanted to add to it. Shop at Home was sold out. Since my parents live fairly close to Tyson’s Corner, I first called there – no luck! After calling a couple more of the LEGO stores I quickly learned that Building Bonanza was a pretty popular item this year – it was sold out everywhere.

I then put out an e-mail to some of my ILTCO co-horts and Steve Barile was able to put his hands on one for me and get it shipped to Virginia before Christmas! Thanks Steve! My Dad will be thrilled.

LEGO Christmas Ornaments

Each Christmas Travis’ Cub Scout Pack (Pack 200) adopts a couple families for the Holidays. They collect presents and decorate Christmas trees and then deliver it all to two needy families. Last year I set each of the scouts in Travis’ den up with bricks to build a LEGO Santa. They were such a hit I was asked to do it again this year.

This year we built a Snowman. The kids just love doing them and they make fairly unique ornaments. I wish I could take credit for the design but they are slight modifications to a set of Christmas ornaments LEGO offered for sale (4759) a couple years ago.

We ended up making some of these for my sister Megan who just moved to Japan after getting married and my parents as Christmas gifts.

More ILTCO Progress!

I finally had a chance to do some work on the ILTCO web site again. The old process for assigning permissions to users was really cumbersome. I have re-written it from scratch and it works much better plus it retains the existing permissions so it is possible to see what the user already has before adding or removing permissions. A number of other minor fixes were also taken care of as I touched code. I also incorportated phpHtmlLib 2.5.4 and pushed everything out to the ILTCO development site.

LEGO at the North Carolina State Fair

A while back Joe Meno and I got hooked up with the North Carolina State Fair to judge their LEGO category. The LEGO category falls under the large domain of Crafts and Hobbies and is broken down into 4 subcategories:

  • Age 3-8 Kit
  • Age 3-8 Original
  • Age 9-15 Kit
  • Age 9-15 Original

We go to the fair every year so I have looked at the LEGO entries and tried to understand how they were judged. Well, Joe and I learned! Up until this year, a group of ladies who run the Hobbies and Crafts would have to judge the LEGO category too! They dreaded it because they had no idea what was a kit, what was original, what took skill, and what did not. Joe and I got hooked up with the Fair through Samuel Cox. Sam, who is a regular (and very good) builder with NCLTC, is too old to enter the competition but too young to judge it (you have to be 18). So he contacted Joe and I and now we are State Fair Judges.

We arrived at the Fairgrounds around 10:30 and went to find Goldie. After receiving our instructions and judging forms, Joe and I spent about an hour judging. Judging the Kit category was a challenge. How do you judge something where someone essentially followed the directions? What if two (or more) people build the same kit (which happened)? We ended up placing a lot of weight on the age of the builder.

Judging the Original Category was more fun and we spent most of our time doing it. Some of the entries were really clever. LEGO and K’nex are combined into one category so we also had some K’nex entries to judge. All in all, we had a good time, I hope the winning children are happy. We made some suggestions to Goldie about doing away with the Kit category and replacing it with another Original Category – suggested using North Carolina as a theme. We also expressed our desire for an adult category but it doesn’t look like that will happen unless the Hobbies and Crafts get moved to a larger building. We can hope though! We are already on the hook for judging next year – should be fun.
