Show Preparation

The last couple of shows I have participated in have been been pressed for time getting ready and I end up bringing boxes and boxes of stuff to the show, much of which never gets displayed.  I find that a lot of the vehicles end up missing parts here and there from being transported and over time, I have a lot of “rot” in my accessories.

For LEGOPalooza 2009 I am trying to cull through exactly what I am going to haul over to Chapel Hill and what will stay home.  Last night my son and I went through all of the baseplates we’ll need and the core set of downtown buildings I want to take.  I have more building modules than I need so there is no need to take them all over to the show.  It also allowed me to go through and repair a couple of them where pieces had fallen off from being moved around my basement or from transport from the last show.

This morning I got up and started on another box.  I have some outlying building I like to use (Saw Mill, Train Station, Cargo Depot, etc.) and each of the buildings has seen some pretty serious decay over the past year from simply being in the way down in the basement.  I got them all reassembled, the train station with it’s clock tower has always been a problem, so I took the opportunity to “improve” how the clock tower attaches to the roof – hopefully those two 2×4 slopes won’t keep collapsing inside the building.  It is a real pain to get them out and get the roof back together!

LEGOPalooza Planning

Tonight my son and I took a quick baseplate inventory in preparation for LEGOPalooza which is in two weeks!!!  It amazes me how many different types of baseplates there are.  I must have three different types of runway plates just in green!

My piece of the layout looks like this:

NCLTC_LEGOPalooza_2009_MPW

It looks like I have enough baseplates of each type to completely cover my section of the layout.  It always looks so much better when it is all covered.

I didn’t do a complete inventory but I did count a few particular plates to get an idea of what I had.

  • Baseplate 32×32 Green:  83 – I probably have close to 100 as I have a bunch of them tied up in permanent structures.
  • Baseplate 32×32 Blue:  30 – I am not sure where I got them all from, I don’t recall buying this many!
  • Baseplate 32×32 Grey:  1 – I thought this was odd.  I have a bunch of 16×32 grey baseplates but only one 32×32 grey baseplate.  Lots of roadplates though!

NCLTC at LEGOPalooza

I have been working on the layout plan for the NCLTC layout at LEGOPalooza lately.  This is an interesting layout because we are going to use standard banquet tables instead of our own tables.  It is nice because hauling the tables around and setting them up is a real chore.  However, they aren’t an ideal size so they pose some layout challenges.

This is the first layout NCLTC has done in a long time and it looks like it should be a good one.  I am reusing a bunch of stuff (as usual) but plan to build a couple new things too.  I need to use all of those dark red and dark blue bricks I got from the Hobby Train project!

CTB-6500 Instructions Available

I finally tracked down the LDraw part I was missing to properly generate the instructions for my CTB-6500 Yellow Monster Truck.  The instructions are now available for download as a PDF file (6.67MB).  Enjoy!

This is my first set of instructions done with LPub4 which greatly simplifies the process of documenting a model.  The cover image was generated with POV-Ray.  I hope to have several more models available in the near future.

NCLUG Dinner

My scheduled freed up a bit and I was able to go out to Pizzeria Uno at Brier Creek last night for the NCLUG dinner.  We had a nice time and spent much of time perusing the LEGO Collectors Guide I had picked up in Europe a few months ago.  I also took my yellow Monster Truck and the instructions I generated with LPub to share with the group.

Carin has asked me to coordinate a train display for LEGOPalooza so I have committed to her I will.  Fortunately Moorehead Planatarium has banquet tables and we won’t have to haul the NCLTC tables over to Chapel Hill.  I will post more details on the NCLTC blog once I get my planning (ie TrackDraw) environment resurrected.
